PTA is an organization made up of parents, teachers, school staff and local community members who work together to enrich the lives of our students. PTA sponsors many events, programs, and activities throughout the year, and also supplements district funding for trained specialists in computers, science, art, music, and P.E.
The PTA needs your contributions throughout the year to raise funds to support the amazing educational and fun events that we host for ALL of the students here at Kellogg. For example, your generous donations help fund the Spring Carnival, Specialists’ salaries (Art, Music, PE, Science, and Computer Lab), Read-a-Thon, Book Fairs, yearbooks, technology support in all the classrooms, and so much more.
Here are some ways you can help out:
* Become a member of the PTA. It is only $10 for the membership and this gives you the ability to vote on how we spend our funds at the PTA association meetings held four times a year. This doesn’t lock you into volunteering or being present at all the PTA events, it’s just a quick and easy way to support.
* Donate as graciously as you can to the Annual Giving campaign. In order to reach our goal of $25,500 this year, we are asking EVERY family to participate. With increased spending to support growing inflation and the needs we have at Kellogg, we need to reach our goal this year, so every dollar counts.
* Volunteer. The PTA is a 100% volunteer-run organization, so you can support the PTA by offering your skills and time. We have several open coordinator positions, so please take some time to see if you would be able to help in any way. And the best part about volunteering for the PTA is you become part of a bigger community here at Kellogg AND being actively involved in your child’s education!

PTA President’s Message October 2017
Happy October, Kellogg Families!
Now that school is back in full swing, we hope this finds your family having transitioned from summer well. One of the great things about our school is the myriad of opportunities that PTA provides for families to connect with the Kellogg community outside of the classroom. We have a few events coming up this month you won’t want to miss.
National Walk/Bike to School Day is October 4th and will be the official kick-off for B.O.W. W.O.W. (Bike/Bus on Wednesdays, Walk on Wednesdays). Leave your car at home and bike, bus, or walk to school to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Family Science Night on October 12th is a fun event you will not want to miss. The classrooms and MPR will have memorable hands-on activities, experiments, and presentations for the whole family. Preorder pizza dinners will be available for the first time for families on the go. Don’t forget to grab a treat from our 6th graders’ bake sale as well.
Reflections—this year’s theme is “Within Reach”—is a wonderful art program currently going on and all submissions are due October 16th. Thank you to Julie Swenson for coordinating this enriching program.
We would like to remind you that these special events couldn’t happen without your support. It’s not too late to join the PTA for the 2017-2018 school year. A portion of your annual membership dues of $10.00 per person remains at our school to cover our basic operating expenses and support our special programs. The remainder goes to State and National PTA to support programs and legislation affecting all children across our nation. Becoming a member of the PTA does not require you to attend meetings or join committees, it does however, allow your vote to be counted on how your fundraising dollars are used toward programs. The class with the highest membership will win a principal’s recess, so be sure to turn in those envelopes! Membership drive ends on October 20th. Many thanks to Gina Terlinden for her initiative in taking on membership this year.
Kellogg’s first Garden Work Day will be on Saturday, October 21st from 9am-12pm so please mark your calendars and join in on the fun! Come meet our new garden educator, Cori Likes, as we all work together to beautify and prepare Kellogg’s garden area for a new herb garden. There will be plenty of garden projects for children as well as craft activities. Please bring the whole family out along with work gloves and shovels if you have them handy. Green thumbs not required!
UCSB’s Gauchos Give Soccer Game Night against UC Davis is coming up on October 21st. Students will receive free admission to the game as well as the interactive Kids Zone, the opportunity to be on the field as the players are introduced before kick-off, and a post- game autograph session with UCSB Men’s Soccer players.
Karie Ide, Vice President of Ways & Means, along with Kara Hornbuckle, a new addition to the PTA Executive Board as Co-Vice President of Ways & Means, have kicked off Kellogg’s 2017-2018 Annual Giving Campaign. Each year, the Kellogg PTA raises money to supplement the salaries of our specialists in the fields of science, computer, art, music, and P.E. beyond what our district provides to all of its schools. In addition to providing more specialist time for our students, our PTA also purchases additional classroom supplies and school equipment and continues to raise money to support the band program, strings program, noon league sports, school-wide assemblies, and special events such as the Read-A-Thon and yearbook. This year, our targeted goal with all the fundraisers is to raise over $90,000 to continue supporting all these programs, and with your help, our fundraising committee will come that much closer to reaching our goal.
It was great to see so many returning and new families at Back to School Night as well as the Back-to-School Picnic and Book Fair. Thank you to Erin Cross for her leadership and enthusiasm, along with new parent volunteer Jill Tripi, in planning yet another exceptional Back to School Picnic. Thank you also to Rhonda DuPar for her organization and hard work on the Book Fair. Kellogg’s annual fall events would not happen without the effort and time from our many volunteers: Susan Farley and Kristen Rogers for spearheading our successful ongoing AXXESS book sales; Karen van Gool for heading 6th grade fundraising efforts; Kyle Begley for their creative signs, bulletin board, and marquee updates of upcoming events; Christine Blaney for working so hard to bring so many exciting afterschool classes and Enrichment Programs for our Kellogg kids; Staci Wansor for her help with Box Tops and Labels for Education; Sara Prince and Tamara Norton for formatting, editing, and printing out our newsletters; and Adriana Navarro for her valuable Spanish translation services. Thank you to all the new parents who have stepped up and volunteered to help with our programs. Again, Kellogg wouldn’t be the great school it is without your support. As always, if you ever have any questions about the PTA, volunteer opportunities, or ideas for new events/programs, please feel free to contact me.
