April hopefully promises some much needed rain showers as we move forward into our very busy springtime. I was proud of our Kellogg students as they presented their student-led conferences to parents and family members. Many students shared self-evaluation results, led families through a Number Talks discussion, and toured their family around their classroom, sharing important projects, classroom procedures, and tools and resources used throughout their school day. For many parents, it gave them a better understanding of the state standards, classroom routines and procedures associated with delivery of the standards, and for some grade levels a view of the math pilot program. Students appeared confident and excited to share their learning progress with family members. Thank you for being an integral part to this learning process.
In this edition, we are recognizing students for the Jog-A-Thon. Hopefully you remembered to turn in your Jog-A-Thon money today in order to be considered for any prizes at the April 8th Flagpole Assembly. Each of these events and the upcoming art show and book fair are incredible opportunities that all of our students benefit from. Unfortunately, these events cannot continue without the help of our parent volunteers. Please consider joining the PTA Executive Board or assisting or heading a PTA committee next year to help keep these great opportunities in place for our Kellogg students. Nominating committee members are looking for parents who do not wish to see any of these events disappear from our campus and are willing to contribute.
Classes are preparing for the upcoming California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), California’s name for Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) in grades 3-6. Different grade levels will be testing in our computer lab between April 7 and May 1st. Fifth graders will still be taking the STAR Science Test and our students who normally take the CAPA will also continue to do so within the above time line. Please view the testing schedule inside to view your child’s test dates. Please avoid scheduling any doctor’s appointments or trips during this testing period. We do have some afternoon testing periods throughout the testing period. Please help us by making sure that your child arrives to school on time and emotionally ready to take this state exam. We need to have our students well-rested and prepared to take this test each morning.
I hope to see you out at Open House on Thursday, April 23rd from 6:00-8:00PM. Families will have the opportunity to visit classrooms, the art show, and book fair. Public Schools Week is April 20-24th and a good time to make an appointment to visit classrooms between 9:00 and 11:00. See inside the newsletter for more information regarding classroom visitations.
Kindergarten Registration is now in progress. If you know a kindergartner (or preschooler) who is planning to attend Kellogg in the fall, but missed the information night or has not registered yet, please encourage them to stop in the office.
Kellogg Track Team prepares for their next upcoming meet. We will be hosting the GUSD All-Star Meet at Kellogg on April 26th from 1:00-4:00. We are limited to the number of students who can participate in this meet. Interested first and second grade students can join the April 24th after school practice from 3:00-4:00 with a signed parent permission slip to help prepare for the May 3rd All-County Track Meet held at SBCC. This requires a registration fee. Information will be distributed at track practice.
Our kindergarten through second grade classrooms are eagerly practicing for this year’s Spring Sing on the evening of Wednesday, May 12th. Mr. Lynn-Jacobs has been working on with each grade level on a variety of songs and will be leading the group. Performance begins at 6:00PM outside behind the library. Families should mark their calendars early and plan on attending this fun event. Remember to bring blankets and/or chairs.
